Insurance industry complaints down

DATA COMPILED by the National Association of Insurance Commissioners show some good news and some room for improvement. The data show that consumer complaints against insurance companies are down for the third consecutive year, which is good news for the industry. However, the top three reasons for consumers filing the complaints stayed the same.

In 2006, 190,572 complaints were reported. That's 7.8 percent fewer than in 2005. The top reason for complaints was delays (21.9 percent), followed closely by denial of claim (18.7 percent). Unsatisfactory settlement/offer, cancellation, and premium and rating round out the top five causes of complaints.
