Employees need home computers, HR directors say

Human resources professionals place a high value on home computers, so much so that they may expect employees to have one. A survey by Purchasing Power found over 94 percent of HR professionals think it's very important or somewhat important for employees to have a computer at home, and over half offer no solutions for employees without one.

Most respondents (81.5 percent) want employees to have computers for better access to benefit information. Improving employee skills with online education also ranked high, as did accessing wellness programs; 50.6 percent of respondents said each of these are an important use of home computers.

Roughly one-quarter of HR professionals surveyed estimate more than 30 percent of their employees don't have computers at home, and over half (57.7 percent) don't offer any solutions for those employees. Of the 42 percent who do, 28.5 percent have computer kiosks in the workplace, and 27 percent loan laptops to their employees. Slightly more than 16 percent offer a computer purchase program as a voluntary benefit.

Purchasing Power surveyed HR professionals at the 21st Annual Benefits Forum & Expo and the Society for Human Resource Management's 60th Annual Conference to find out how important it is for employees to have a computer and why.
