Younger workers favor lump-sum distributions

  • Over 16 million workers took a lump-sum distribution of retirement assets as of 2006, the most recent data available.
  • The average amount of distibutions was $32,219; almost half were for less than $10,000.
  • More than 55 percent of distributions were for workers age 40 or younger.
