I've struggled with deadlines my entire working life. It's the risk you run when you chase a journalism career.

I think it was Karl Kraus who said a journalist is "a person without any ideas but with an ability to express them; a writer whose skill is improved by a deadline: the more time he has, the worse he writes."

That certainly describes the way I've worked – and why I could never make a career out of freelancing. The deadline isn't just my muse. She's my morning coffee, my evening scotch and every keystroke in between.
