The Detroit News reports that with a $45.2 billion unfunded liability in the Michigan Public School Employees Retirement System, Republican lawmakers are hoping to fast-track a bill overhauling that system and requiring school and community college employees to be 60 to qualify for retiree health care.
Most teachers, administrators and support staff would also see their pension contribution rise to 8 percent of annual salary, an increase of 5 percent in some instances.
Steve Goff, a teacher in rural Midland County, taught for 18 years and bought 10 yeras of credit in his plan, with hopes of retiring in two years at age 54.
