Employers find outplacement services outdated

Although many employers are in need of outplacement services, they are not happy with some of the options offered today. Rather, employers report wanting an outplacement service that combines online and social technology, according to a recent survey by DirectEmployers Association and CareerBeam.

Fifty-eight percent of respondents say they consider their current outplacement services outdated, expensive and lacking the proper tools. Outplacement services are most often offered as a means to help transitioning employees find new positions.

Another 26 percent of respondents believe senior executives gain the most out of outplacement services as opposed to other employees. Still, 82 percent of respondents provide outplacement services to senior executives.

“This survey reflects the fact that companies value outplacement services but increasingly view brick-and-mortar solutions as outdated,” said Bill Warren, executive director of DirectEmployers Association. “Our members are looking for cost-effective solutions that they can offer to all of their transitioning employees. “The outplacement industry is evolving as a result of the emergence of social, mobile and online technology and its benefits for laid-off employees are immense.”

Data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics shows that the average unemployed person in America searches for employment for 38 weeks. This is more than twice the time it took just 10 years ago. The most helpful components of outplacement services are electronic job match alerts, a virtual career center and social network integration, respondents say.
