MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) — Alabama should have no counties left out of a federally operated health insurance exchange that's supposed to start Oct. 1.
|The state Insurance Department says Blue Cross Blue Shield of Alabama and United Healthcare have filed proposals for statewide coverage, and Humana has proposed plans for 50 of the 67 counties. All three companies are awaiting federal approval.
|The federal government will operate the exchange in Alabama because Gov. Robert Bentley was opposed to a state-run exchange. He said he wants no part of the federal Affordable Care Act. The federal government has awarded $2.4 million in grants to 13 Alabama organizations to help educate uninsured citizens about the new options and get signed up.
