Atlantic City's largest casino workers union is ramping up its opposition to proposed pay cuts as contracts with nine of the 11 gambling halls are set to expire Thursday.
Thousands of casino workers protested outside Resorts Casino Hotel on Thursday, denouncing steep pay cuts most employees had to take when new owners bought the casino last year and throwing down the gauntlet to all 11 of the city's casinos with contract talks coming up soon.
The union representing Atlantic City, N.J. casino service employees is encouraging workers at Resorts Casino Hotel who took pay cuts last winter to apply for food stamps.
After two bad years in which gamblers either stayed home or held onto their wallets more tightly, the nation's casinos began to slowly rebound last year, with revenue increasing slightly even as the number of jobs declined.
