Spectera frames college donation

SPECTERA RECENTLY DONATED eyeglass frames valued at $350,000 to the Southern California College of Optometry. The company honored the school for its teaching programs and community outreach activities.

The latest donation is one of several that Spectera has provided to optometry programs across the country. Past contributions included gifts to the Indiana University School of Optometry, the University of Houston College of Optometry, the Illinois chapter of Volunteer Optometric Service to Humanity and the University of Maryland School of Medicine's Department of Opthamology.

Spectera's United Optical retail division also provides free eye exams and eyeglasses for clients of Unity Health Care in Washington D.C. and the Lutheran Mission Society in central Maryland.

The SCCO's eye care clinic is a 25,500 square-foot clinic, which serves as both a teaching facility and community health service center. It provides access for two million people living within a 25-mile radius, to eye care. Basic vision exams, contact lens services, orthoptics, vision and learning disability therapy, pediatric vision care, ocular disease diagnosis, special testing, low vision rehabilitation and eyeware dispensing are among the services provided.

SCCO also owns and operates a teaching and community clinic, the Optometric Center of Los Angeles. It was built and equipped in 1972 with the aid of a grant from the U.S. Public Health Service. SCCO eye care professionals manage 180,000 patient visits a year, making it the largest practice of its kind in the nation.
