Work-life balance, development provide highest job satisfaction impact

According to a survey conducted by staffing firm OfficeTeam, the top factors to job satisfaction are a healthy work-life balance at 28 percent and opportunities to learn and grow at 27 percent.

Other contributing factors include ability to accomplish goals at 20 percent, camaraderie with co-workers at 13 percent and a good relationship with management at 11 percent. The answers were varied among respondents by age as respondents between the ages of 35 and 44 are most concerned with work-life balance at 46 percent, and those between the ages of 18 and 34 cite learning and growth opportunities as the most important at 37 percent.

"Professional priorities change over time," says Robert Hosking, executive director of OfficeTeam. "Because there's no one-size-fits-all formula for encouraging job satisfaction, supervisors should get to know their team members individually to better understand what motivates and inspires each of them."  

To help employees attain a healthy work-life balance, OfficeTeam offers the following five tips:   

  1. Be flexible. When it’s appropriate for the business, employers should offer alternative work arrangements, such as modified schedules or job sharing. 
  2. Reduce their commute. If certain employees can handle their jobs remotely, consider allowing them to work from home one or more days a week.
  3. Respect personal time. Employers should avoid contacting staff outside of office hours unless the issue is urgent and cannot wait until the next business day.
  4. Take a breather. Workers should be encouraged to take breaks and vacations, and management should set a good example by doing so, as well.
  5. Bring in reinforcements. When employees are overwhelmed with work, employers should provide extra help. In these cases, temporary professionals could be helpful.
