According to the Department of Health and Human Services, in the run-up to 2014, the new health care law’s Pre-Existing Condition Insurance Plan (PCIP) program is providing insurance to nearly 50,000 people with high-risk pre-existing conditions nationwide.

Currently, insurers can no longer deny coverage to children because of a pre-existing condition. Starting in 2014, refusing to cover anyone with a pre-existing condition is prohibited. Insurance companies will also not be allowed to charge higher premiums based on health status, pre-existing conditions, or for being a woman.
