Amgen's cholesterol drug, Repatha, hasn't gained FDA approval yet, but the EU is moving to approve it. The potential patient population for the drug exceeds 25 million.
23andMe Inc., the genetic-testing company backed by Google Inc., gained U.S. regulatory permission to sell consumers its first screening kit to detect whether they carry the risk of a rare genetic disorder.
People buying PPACA plans for 2015 can expect to pay about 3 percent more on average for the cheapest coverage a small increase by historical standards though premium changes vary widely by state.
Small businesses are dropping health insurance for their workers, as PPACA lets them send employees to new marketplaces where they can often get subsidies from the government to buy coverage.
WellPoint and other insurers are adding customers as people buy insurance through the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, the law that requires all Americans to have health insurance and provides subsidies and online shopping markets for them to do so.
Enrollment in Aetna plans reached 23.6 million in the quarter, an increase of 470,000 members from the second quarter. Aetna will offer coverage in 18 Affordable Care Act exchanges in 2015.
Estimates of U.S. health care spending for the next five years have been lowered by two federal agencies, and the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act is getting much of the credit.
