TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — Republicans in the Kansas House say they're willing to sink an important unemployment insurance bill to salvage a proposal to prohibit labor unions from using funds deducted from members' paychecks for political activities.
House and Senate negotiators met Thursday to discuss the unemployment bill.
It's considered vital by legislative leaders, Gov. Sam Brownback and the Kansas Chamber of Commerce. It would raise money from employers to pay back loans made to Kansas by the federal government last year to cover benefits for unemployed workers.
But Republican Rep. Anthony Brown of Eudora, his chamber's lead negotiator, said he wants the bill to include the so-called "paycheck protection" proposal restricting unions. That policy is favored by many Republicans, but it's stalled in the Senate.
The negotiations then broke off indefinitely.
