Weekly U.S. unemployment applications dipped last week but not by enough to suggest job growth is picking up. Applications declined to 387,000 from an upwardly revised 389,000 in the previous week. But the four-week average, a less volatile measure, rose for the fourth straight week.
Below are the states with the largest increases in applications. No states reported a decline larger than 1,000. The state data are for the week that ended June 9, one week behind the national figures.
States with the biggest increases:
Pennsylvania: Up 7,036, due to layoffs in transportation, entertainment, lodging, food services and health care
Texas: Up 4,028, no reason given
Florida: Up 1,933, due to layoffs in agriculture, construction, manufacturing and services
South Carolina: Up 1,845, due to layoffs in manufacturing
