MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) — The U.S. Supreme Court decision upholding President Barack Obama's health care overhaul is expected to help Vermont's more ambitious plan for universal, publicly funded health care.

Gov. Peter Shumlin has been saying the state would push ahead no matter how Thursday's ruling from the Supreme Court turned out. But the law remaining in place is expected to mean Vermont's health overhaul will be helped by up to $400 million a year in federal tax credits and other subsidies.

Vermont leaders are also starting to react, with both Sen. Patrick Leahy and U.S. Rep. Peter Welch hailing the decision. Shumlin is expected to comment later.

State Sen. Randy Brock, the Republican seeking to unseat Shumlin, says the subsidies the state will get will only delay the failure of Shumlin's plan.
