The U.S. Department of Justice is increasing its fines for violations of the Americans with Disabilities Act for the first time since 1999.
For violations of the act that occur after April 28, the Justice Department's new maximum fines will be $75,000 for the first offense and $150,000 for subsequent violations.
Those are up from $55,000 and $110,000 respectively, set in 1999.
Those levels still apply to incidents that occurred before April 28 but are adjudicated after that date.
These fines would be in addition to any monetary settlements the department seeks on behalf of individuals.
