According to the SFN Group Employee Confidence Index, workers' confidence regarding their personal employment dropped slipped 0.3 points to 47.8 in July, but workers' economic optimism dropped significantly, with fewer respondents feeling confident in the strength of the economy and job availability.
"Employee confidence declined for the second consecutive month, registering at its lowest point since July 2009 when our index stood at 46.7," says Roy Krause, president and CEO of SFN Group Inc. "I have no doubt that the news surrounding the U.S. debt ceiling negotiations contributed to the concerns and anxiety that our workforce is feeling. Additionally, many employers continue to focus on increasing operational efficiencies and are hesitant to add additional permanent staff until more positive news comes out about the health of the economy.
"However, our industry continues to see employers increase their flexible workforce and we encourage job seekers to consider this a viable way to get their foot in the door."
According to the index, 16 percent of respondents say the economy has strengthened, a decline from 20 percent in June, and 61 percent of respondents believe fewer jobs are available, a 3 percent jump from the previous month.
Fifty-nine percent of respondents feel confident regarding their current employers' futures, a 2 percent gain from last month; however, respondents are increasingly skeptical in their ability to find a new job, with 38 percent of respondents expressing confidence in July, compared to 40 percent in June.
Still, 69 percent of respondents say it is unlikely they will lose employment in the next year, which is a 1 percent increase from the previous month. Thirty-three percent of respondents are likely to search for new employment in the next 12 months. This is a slight decline from the 35 percent of respondents who reported the likelihood of transitioning jobs in June.
