Amazon Pharmacy plans to expand its same-day prescription delivery service to an additional 2,000 communities by the end of this year, bringing the total to 4,500. This will help alleviate problems caused by pharmacy closures, staffing shortages and transportation barriers, the company said in a news release.

"Patients shouldn't have to choose between speed, cost and convenience when it comes to their medication, regardless of where they live," Vice President John Love said. "By combining our pharmacy expertise with our logistics network, we're removing critical barriers and helping patients start treatment faster -- setting a new standard for accessible, digital-forward pharmacy care."

Amazon Pharmacy, founded in 2020, currently delivers to all 50 states and the District of Columbia. Its medication delivery service offers an alternative for those who need timely medication and live in underserved areas or lack proximity to a brick-and-mortar pharmacy. It uses several tactics to reduce delivery time:

  • In dense urban areas such as Manhattan, it delivers medications with e-bikes.
  • Electric vehicles are used in suburban communities such as Chesterbrook, Pa.
  • Remote locations such as Mackinac Island, Mich., are served by ferries and horses.

Fast delivery extends beyond major metropolitan areas. Amazon Pharmacy provides several shipping options to remote Alaska towns and across the Navajo Nation in communities such as Fort Defiance, Ariz., where the nearest physical pharmacy can be more than a 45- to 60-minute drive away and other mail-order delivery services take between five and 10 days The company leverages its delivery logistics network to conveniently bring prescriptions to customers' homes the next day or within two to three days.

Amazon also is integrating pharmacy services with One Medical, the primary care provider it acquired in 2023. Some One Medical patients can pick up prescriptions at in-clinic kiosks, and the company began filling select prescriptions at those electronic kiosks in December.

Financial analysts are monitoring the potential impact of this and other recent health care initiatives.

"This move into pharmacy delivery and AI supported primary care uses more of Amazon's logistics and technology in health care access," Simply Wall Street reported. "As these services roll out to more locations, the scale and adoption of Amazon's health offerings are likely to be key areas for investors to monitor."
