Remote Area Medical is a nonprofit organization that offers free health care to people in remote areas of the world. The organization is supported by volunteers and, according to the Web site, provides "free health care, dental care, eye care, veterinary services, and technical and educational assistance" to people who can't afford and can't access basic care.

Newsweek reports on a recent RAM event in Wise, Va., where the organization saw approximately 2,500 patients. It performed 156 mammograms and almost 3,900 tooth extractions, and gave away over 1,000 pairs of eyeglasses, as well as fitting 30 people for free dentures over the course of the weekend event. Additionally, RAM screened hundreds of people for diseases like diabetes and heart disease.
