Fluctuating gas prices are eating away employees' paychecks, but they offer employers an opportunity to find extra perks their employees are certain to appreciate. With a little creativity, they can find a way to lift the gas burden from employees' shoulders without too much trouble or expense. Recognition Management Institute, an employer-consulting service, offers some tips for giving employees a helping hand at the pump:

|
  1. Shorten the work week to four days with extended work hours.
  2. Allow employees to telecommute one day a week, or even more frequently.
  3. Check out local government agencies for incentives for having employees work at home.
  4. Encourage car pooling with fellow employees or neighbors.
  5. Bring in a AAA representative to present on ways to improve gas mileage and with local mechanics inspect employee cars for free.
  6. Provide stress management sessions at work.
  7. Bring in childcare or set up a day care opportunity close to work to lessen child care travel expenses.
  8. Reduced discretionary budgets for employees will make movie passes or restaurant certificates more meaningful as recognition items.
  9. Make exercise programs and gym equipment available at work saving travel costs and membership fees.
  10. Work with your local tourism board to see what package deals can be arranged to assist employees with little or no vacation plans.
