More than 10 million Americans are covered by health savings accounts, according to a census by America's Health Insurance Plans. AHIP's annual survey found that HSA ownership increased 25 percent since last year. The census didn't ask about participation in health reimbursement accounts.

Enrollment has increased every year since 2005, according to the census, from just 1 million lives covered to over 8 million last year. Popularity has been driven primarily by group markets.

The large group market has shown the greatest interest in HSAs; coverage increased 33 percent between January 2009 and January 2010, and half of all people covered by an HSA are in the large group market. Small group coverage increased 22 percent, and covers 30 percent of HSA owners.
