LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — A bill that would overhaul the Nebraska commission which hears public-sector labor disputes is set for a legislative vote.

Lawmakers are scheduled to start debate on the proposal to apply stricter rules to the Commission of Industrial Relations. The bill by Omaha Sen. Steve Lathrop is the culmination of months of work among lawmakers, businesses, unions and other stakeholders.

The measure has been a contentious issue this session, in the heat of public union and employer battle in other states. The Nebraska bill is designed to make the commission's decisions more predictable, to help cities and school districts control costs. Republican Gov. Dave Heineman has suggested it doesn't go far enough.
