As Congress and the president continue to battle on debt ceiling, the majority of young Hispanics saythey prefer spending cuts over raising new taxes to get the economyon track, a new poll suggests.

According to Generation Opportunity, Hispanics ages 18-29 saythey want to see less government interference, lower taxes onbusiness profits and reduced federal spending in general.

Nearly 70 percent say they prefer reducing federal spending toraising individual taxes in order to balance the federal budget.The majority believe that if taxes on business profits werereduced, companies would be more likely to hire. A 56 percentmajority also agreed “the economy grows best when individuals areallowed to create businesses without government interference.”

“Young Americans in every community across the nation have beennegatively impacted by unemployment and the lack ofopportunity—especially within the Hispanic community—and they knowthe solution to recovery is not more federal spending, taxes andinterference with those who have the courage and resources tocreate jobs,” says Generation Opportunity President PaulConway.

The organization recently released information saying that young people weredisappointed in President Obama’s economic policies, with a thirdof them saying they do not approve of his handling of youthunemployment.

“If elected leaders in Washington think the generation theyencouraged to get involved in reshaping the future of America isnow simply going to sit back, take instructions to be patient andremain hopeful as they watch their dreams and country put at risk,then they are out of touch with the very citizens who granted themtheir trust and vote,” Conway says.

Commissioned by Generation Opportunity and conducted byinc./WomanTrend, 600 people were polled April 16-22. Margin oferror is plus or minus 4 percent.
