ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — A union official says thousands of striking workers are joining picket lines and rallies at Verizon work locations from Massachusetts to Virginia.

A Communications Workers of America spokesman Robert Master says about 75 workers showed up at Verizon's headquarters in Manhattan on Monday morning.

He says picket lines also are going up in Rhode Island, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware and Washington, D.C.

The contract for 45,000 employees expired at midnight Saturday without agreement on issues including health care costs and pensions.

Verizon says it's asking for contract changes because its land-line business has been declining for more than a decade.

The union says Verizon wants worker concessions at a time when it's making billions in profits.

Verizon spokesman Richard Young says thousands of managers have been sent to help work in the affected states.
