Graduate students among the nation's top business schools prefer working for an employer that offers opportunity for advancement, rather than financial incentives, according to a recent Deloitte survey.

The second most important consideration is compensation and benefits at 44 percent, and the third most important consideration is a "fun" work environment at 33 percent, the survey finds.

"We are just as interested in learning from these students as they may be in learning from us," says Garth Andrus, principal, Deloitte Consulting LLP. "Direct exposure to these students through this type of competitive recruiting event is invaluable to our organization. This approach to recruiting is a response to the swiftly changing demands of tomorrow's work force, and we are lucky enough to have brought on a number of grea`t participants from past events to join Deloitte."

The survey also reveals respondents believe professional development efforts are important in their first post-graduate job as well as direct project management at 48 percent. Approximately 40 percent of respondents say direct access to management is the second most important factor for professional development, and another 77 percent of respondents cite annual goal-setting.

For career advancement and promotions, 36 percent of respondents say 360-degree evaluations should be the most valued while 47 percent of respondents say the second most important initiative for professional development is direct manager feedback. Respondents unanimously agree that company and industry standard exams are the third most important.
