The U.S. Department of Labor is awarding a $3.4 million grant to enlist re-employment and support services to approximately 850 workers who were laid off in July because of the closure of the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co. facility in Union City, Tenn.

"This grant from the federal government will fund training and other services for former Goodyear workers who lost their jobs through no fault of their own," says Secretary of Labor Hilda L. Solis. "By updating and enhancing their skills, these workers will be better prepared for good jobs in Tennessee's growing industries."

Along with training and support services, the grant, which is under the Tennessee Department of Labor and Workforce Development, also helps these workers find employment in Tennessee, as a result of their eligibility for Trade Adjustment Assistance benefits.
