"Toby is in HR, which technically means he works for corporate, so he's really not a part of our family. Also, he's divorced, so he's really not a part of his family."

Michael Scott, "The Office"

Let's be clear: I'm not a human resource professional. I know, I know…I should have brought this up sooner. I didn't mean to lead you on, but trust me, you don't want a journalist anywhere near all those confidential files.

'Sides, half my jokes aren't allowed anywhere near HR.

I only bring this up because last week's rant about Herman Cain and his trail of touches left at least one reader unnerved by my obvious lack of understanding. But it's not that. We have plenty of people on the site – and are always looking for more (hint, hint) – who offer informed opinions from the HR side of the desk. That's why we're here, to offer a platform for the community to discuss issues such as these.

Think of us as simple facilitators, or moderators. We're here to ask questions, challenge conventional thinking and push the discussion further. I like boundaries; they're fun to break.

Besides, I think sometimes each of us can get so caught up in the day-to-day minutiae of just doing our jobs that it takes someone outside the fish bowl to point at something and say, "What the hell is that?"

I get it all the time. I get so lost in the deadlines, the interviews and the missed deadlines that sometimes it takes a Monday morning phone call from an irate reader to think twice about how I approach a story or whether I can slip in another GOP campaign joke.

There are 10 different ways to approach your job every day – and every one of them probably has their place. We're here to maybe throw out a few more you might not have considered – or even to reconsider some of the things you do right now. There's a fine line between a rut and a routine.

Speaking of which, isn't it time for lunch?
