Houston tops the list of the best U.S. cities for industrial jobs, which was compiled by Manufacturers' News Inc., a publisher of industrial directories for all fifty states.
According to MNI, Houston offers 235,038 manufacturing jobs, a growth of 2.9 percent over last year while New York City ranks second with 140,952 jobs, representing a 1.3 percent increase. Chicago is the third-ranked city with 107,264 jobs, a 1.3 percent decline, and St. Louis offers 80,795 jobs, which is down 2.8 percent. Los Angeles comes in at No. 5 with 79,873 jobs, down 4.5 percent.
Five of the top 50 cities on the list are located in California: Los Angeles, San Diego, San Jose, Irvine and Santa Clara. Another five of the top 50 cities are located in Texas: Houston, Dallas, Fort Worth, San Antonio and Austin.

The MNI list shows that 17 of the top 50 cities posted industrial job gains from a year ago, including Salt Lake City at 4.3 percent; Seattle at 3.3 percent; Charlotte, N.C., at 3.1 percent; Portland, Ore., at 2.6 percent; and Tulsa, Okla., at 2.1 percent. Fort Worth, Texas; Oklahoma City; and Louisville, Ky., all experienced employment growth by 1 percent.
MNI's city data only includes employers located within city limits, and all municipalities are counted separately from their suburbs and exurbs.
