While two-thirds of employers in the construction, mining and energy industries were hiring full-time positions in fall 2011, approximately half of them say they had difficulty recruiting for specific jobs, according to a Society for Human Resource Management poll.

The poll also finds that the construction, mining, oil and gas industries report better financial health as opposed to the previous year. Another 46 percent of respondents say they were in a significant or mild recovery from the recession from 36 percent in 2010.

Among the 66 percent of respondents hiring, 51 percent say they had troubles recruiting for specific jobs openings. The most difficult positions to fill are engineers at 88 percent, technicians and programmers at 79 percent, managers and executives at 76 percent, electricians and carpenters at 68 percent, and sales representatives at 60 percent.

Forty-nine percent of respondents say they primarily were hiring direct replacements of jobs lost in the recession, which is close to the 48 percent reported in 2010. While 72 percent of respondents say they were hiring nonmanagement hourly employees, 70 percent of respondents say they were hiring nonmanagement salaried employees.

According to the poll, fewer respondents were hiring for new positions in 2011 at 37 percent than in 2010 at 44 percent. When new positions were being filled, 61 percent of respondents says they were looking for the same skills along with new ones.
