Forty percent of information technology leaders expect increases in permanent positions while 37 percent anticipate growth in temporary positions, according the quarterly IT Executive Outlook survey by staffing firm TEKsystems.
Among respondents planning to bring in more permanent and temporary IT employees, 15 percent say they expect to do so by more than 5 percent. Senior IT leaders, such as chief information officers and IT vice presidents, are the most optimistic when it comes to IT hiring as respectively 54 percent and 43 percent are planning growth in permanent and temporary positions.
According to the survey, CIOs and chief technology officers are most hopeful regarding IT spending. While 49 percent of respondents anticipate seeing increases in IT infrastructure, 47 percent of respondents believe increases will be spent in IT applications services. Another 58 percent of participating CIOs expect growth in infrastructure, and 57 percent plan on spending more on applications.

"With consumerization of IT, mobility, social media, big data and security being at the top of most executives' priority lists, organizations need to ensure their work force strategy is capable of supporting the current and future state of their business," says TEKsystems Director Rachel Russell. "Businesses are realizing their work force requirements will vary from initiative to initiative. By work force planning and effectively leveraging a contingent model, organizations can ramp up or down and efficiently get their IT initiatives done."
Regarding which IT services providers respondents are most likely to rely on for support, niche service providers and staff augmentation providers rank in the top two followed by systems integrators. For strategic planning and IT alignment, respondents are most likely to rely on niche service providers while they are more likely to rely on staff augmentation providers for work force planning. Additionally, staff augmentation providers are the most likely option among respondents for project and planning management, quality assurance and testing, steady state support, and change management.
"Businesses are looking to providers that have specific specialties to address explicit IT challenges, but they also want to partner with fewer vendors to accomplish those IT initiatives," Russell says. "Ultimately, they are searching for providers that offer a wide range of targeted services that can address their specific needs and help them achieve their desired business objectives."
