PITTSBURGH (AP) — The union for the Pittsburgh-area's transit agency is urging its 2,300 members to approve a four-year contract including a wage freeze, more pension contributions by workers, and health care concessions to avoid more than 500 layoffs and a 35-percent cut of bus and light-rail service.
Amalgamated Transit Union Local 85 members will vote Sunday on the tentative contract announced last week.
The union and the Port Authority of Allegheny County both say the contract must be ratified to avoid the largest cuts in the agency's history, including more than 500 layoffs and a 35-percent cut in bus and light-rail service, starting Sept. 1.

Gov. Tom Corbett has said the state will not increase transit subsidies without the concessions. County officials have also pledged to increase funding if the union agrees to concessions.
