MADISON, Wis. (AP) — A group of Republican legislators has forwarded a package of changes to Wisconsin's unemployment benefit rules to a state council for consideration.
The lawmakers say the changes would help reduce on waste and fraud and whittle down the roughly $900 million the state owes the federal government for covering a surge of unemployment claims after the recession struck.
The changes include using $26 million in tax money to pay off interest on the federal loan, reducing ways for employees who quit to collect unemployment, more job search requirements and prohibiting prisoners on work-release from collecting unemployment.
