Principal Financial Group has named Daniel J. Houston as president and chief operating officer.
Houston will oversee the firm's global businesses, including money management arm Principal Global Investors; its international, retirement and investor services; and the U.S. insurance solutions unit. He has also been elected to the firm's board of directors.
Houston will report to Larry D. Zimpleman, former president and CEO, who will continue in the roles of chairman and CEO.

Houston, who was president of retirement, insurance and financial services at Principal Financial Group, will continue in those roles.
As of Sept. 30, Principal Financial Group had $513.5 billion in assets under management.
