Just before the first enrollment deadline, New York granted would-be individual enrollees a reprieve.
In an email shipped out to brokers late Friday afternoon, New York State of Health blamed it on the weather.
"The deadline to apply for or renew coverage that takes effect January 1 has been extended through December 20," it reads. "This affords consumers 5 additional days to complete these transactions. With the recent adverse weather conditions in parts of New York, consumers may have experienced delays in enrolling, and this extension aims to give everyone extra time to get covered.

Brokers – and potential enrollees – should keep in mind, however, the deadline has not changed for carriers (such as Blue Cross) not on the New York exchange.
