The Mutual Fund Industry Awards, presented annually for 22 yearsby the editorial staff of Fund Action and Fund Directions, recentlyhonored the 23rd and latest crop of individuals andcompanies for their excellence, achievements and contributions tothe mutual fund industry.

The publications are leading sources of intelligence for theU.S. mutual fund industry, and theirdeterminations on awards are based on their industrywide duediligence.

Relying on market intelligence as well as input from theindustry garnered through an annual call for nominations, theeditorial staff’s latest selections were honored this week when theawards were presented.

|

Nominees and winners came in a range of categories, includingTrustee of the Year, Lifetime Achievement—Fund Directions, LifetimeAchievement—Fund Actions, Rising Stars of Mutual Funds, and evenAlternative Product of the Year.

But for the retirement industry some were particularly relevant.Among those was Empower Retirement, honored at this year’s ceremonyas Retirement Leader of the Year.

Empower, formed in late 2014 with the acquisition of J.P. MorganRetirement Plan Services (RPS) large-market recordkeeping businessand the suesequent integration of the retirement services business of PutnamInvestments by Great-West Financial, became the second largestretirement services provider in the country.

It currently administers $411 billion in assets for 7.6 millionparticipants, and serves all segments of the employer-sponsoredretirement plan market: government 457 plans, small, midsize, andlarge corporate 401(k) clients, non-profit 403(b) entities andprivate-label recordkeeping clients.

Also honored within the retirement arena were these people:

  • Deal of the Year—John Hancock Financial’s acquisition of NewYork Life Retirement Plan Services

  • Trustee of the Year—Phil McLoughlin of Virtus Funds

  • Lifetime Achievement, Fund Actions— Barbara Krumseik of CalvertInvestments

  • Lifetime Achievement, Fund Directions—Faith Colish of NeubergerBerman
