In this episode, we dive into the exciting (you read that right!) world of compliance, with Jennifer Spiegel Berman, compliance maven and chief legal officer at Lumelight.

One of Jen’s superpowers is her ability to make complex and complicated topics compelling, urgent and understandable. During our conversation, she shares some of her secrets and explains why this skillset is going to become increasingly vital for benefits advisors in the coming years, as compliance becomes an ever more important differentiator during conversations with employers.

Berman goes on to explain why “fiduciary” is a lot more than just a buzzword, and then details how lawsuits and regulatory shifts over the last decade in the retirement space provide some key insights into what to expect next in our industry. She also touches on a number of other timely topics, from gag clauses and mental health parity, to PBM reform, ongoing plan transparency initiatives, and the real world impacts of AI use in plan design.

As the conversation continues, Berman also shares her personal journey as she’s learned to live and work with Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, a genetic connected tissue disease that has required her to learn the limits of resilience and the importance of taking care of yourself first.

And to close out the chat, we branch out into a conversation about everything from Bob’s Burgers and horse girls, to Michelin star restaurants and international travel, to the cutthroat worlds of Succession and the Gilded Age. And be sure to stick around for some first-hand Maryland recommendations from a local, including “that place with the great crabs.”
