As we head into Broker Expo, kicking off April 28, I'm looking forward to being in the room with so many friends and colleagues who continue to push this industry forward. Spring has officially sprung, and there's no better place to gather than Chicago, a city known for turning bold ideas into real impact. Whether it's the energy of the Magnificent Mile, the views along Lake Michigan, or the fact that Chicago dyes its river green every year for St. Patrick's Day, it's a city that knows how to show up and stand out, much like the people in our industry.
There's something about being together in person that brings a different level of connection and perspective, and I always leave these events reminded of why this work matters and who we're doing it for.
In that same spirit, I'm proud to highlight three women who are each making a meaningful impact in their own way, bringing clarity, creativity, and a whole lot of heart to the benefits space.
Please meet Rachel Munoz of freshbenies, Mattison O'Neal of Generous Benefits, and Rachel Fein of RMTS, LLC.
"I'm on a mission to make health care less confusing and more affordable, and it's something I've always been passionate about. Finding a team that truly shares that mission at freshbenies has been a perfect match.
With experience on the broker side, I've seen firsthand how overwhelming and unclear the system can be for both employers and the people they're trying to support. That perspective shapes how I approach my work today.
Over the past year, I've been able to play a part in bringing solutions to organizations that make health care easier to understand and more accessible, helping to create better experiences and real cost savings along the way.
I believe people deserve to feel confident, not overwhelmed, when it comes to their care. Being part of improving that experience is what drives me every day."
"Over the past year, one of my biggest accomplishments has been partnering closely with an employer that offers a uniquely complex, nontraditional benefits structure. These plans can be especially confusing, so my focus has been on turning something overwhelming into something employees can truly understand and feel confident using.
I've spent time one on one with employees, listening to their needs, whether they're preparing for a major life event or managing ongoing care, and helping them build coverage that truly fits their lives.
What's been most meaningful is seeing the impact. Employees aren't just choosing plans, they feel more supported, less stressed, and genuinely healthier. That carries into their work, their families, and their communities. For the employer, it's led to lower costs, stronger retention, and a workforce that feels cared for in a real, lasting way."
"Last summer, I expanded my career into a new side of the benefits industry when I joined RMTS, an independent medical stop loss MGU, after building my background on the PBM side of the business. Stepping into a new area of the benefits ecosystem pushed me to learn quickly, adapt, and grow my confidence in a competitive market.
My background on the PBM side has also given me a valuable perspective on pharmacy risk and how it can influence underwriting decisions, allowing me to bring a broader view to the role. In my previous role, I focused on a multi state region. Since joining RMTS, I've had the opportunity to build relationships, pursue opportunities on a broader national level, and work on some exciting new partnerships.
Those experiences have expanded my perspective, industry knowledge, and professional experience. I've also reached some personal and fitness goals along the way, which has made this past year especially meaningful."
Do you know a woman in our industry who is driving change, lifting others, or quietly raising the standard? The ones reshaping strategy, mentoring the next generation, advocating for clients, or simply showing up every single day with integrity and heart. These are the leaders who move our industry forward. Not always loudly, but always intentionally.
I'm always looking to shine a light on women like this through the Wonder Women series, the ones doing the work, making an impact, and often not pausing long enough to realize it. If someone comes to mind, I'd genuinely love to hear her story. You can always reach me at scombs@combsandc.com.
If you're heading to Broker Expo and meet someone who fits this description, please tell them to find me.
