The D.C. Council has given preliminary approval to an increase in the District of Columbia's minimum wage to $11.50 an hour, one of the nation's highest.
The district's minimum wage is $8.25 an hour, $1 higher than the federal minimum. San Francisco has the nation's highest minimum wage at $10.74, with Santa Fe, N.M., just 2 cents behind.
