Employers are becoming more comfortable with employees using social media sites on the job, as long as it's business-related, according to a new Robert Half Technology survey.

More than half of chief information officers surveyed said they permit employees to use social media sites like Twitter and Facebook, up from 19 percent in 2009.

Thirty-one percent of organizations surveyed say they still prohibit social media use completely while working, but this number is down from 54 percent who prohibited it completely in 2009.

Fourteen percent of companies allow employees to use social media for "limited person use,"—about the same as in 2009. Only 4 percent allow their employees to use social media for "any type of personal use."

"Companies recognize the value of using social media for brand building, whether it's marketing a product, offering customer service, gathering information, or simply listening to what fans and followers have to say," said John Reed, executive director of Robert Half Technology.

Reed also said it is important that employees "become familiar with their companies' policies on Web use and adhere to them."
