HealthLeaders-InterStudy, a provider of managed care market intelligence, reports that employer groups in Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, and Missouri (also known as the Heartland) are looking to health insurers to assist in controlling costs. According to the recent Heartland Health Plan Analysis, more employers are turning to high-deductible and self-insurance health plans to escape mandates and control costs.
As a result, more employers will begin offering preventive measures such as waiving of copays for drugs used to treat chronic conditions, creating better drug adherence and fewer preventable emergency room and hospital visits among employees, according to the report.
"Health insurers in the Heartland region will have more opportunities to offer innovative benefits designs that maximize value for employers and improve healthcare outcomes for employees," says Joel Peyton, market analyst with HealthLeaders-InterStudy.
