This year, 51 percent of employers say they plan to hire while 31 percent say they anticipate keeping their employment levels steady, according to the Employee Engagement and Turnover Trends Report by TalentKeepers.

Meanwhile, only 19 percent of respondent say they expect to make staff cuts this year.

"Over a four-year period, companies reported a consistent decline in plans to downsize or reduce staff, from 43 percent in 2010 down to 21 percent for 2013," says Christopher Mulligan, CEO of TalentKeepers. "Also, more companies are stabilizing major business strategies as well as human resources practices, such as compensation and benefits, showing less urgency to react to changes in the economy, and a greater focus on executing current plans."
