Based on demographics, employee assistance programs can vary by use, according to a new ComPsych Corp. survey that looks at gender, age and industry differences across millions of EAP and work-life calls for a year.
Though it may come as a surprise, men rely on relationship counseling more than women at 22 percent vs. 18 percent, the survey finds.
Employees in their 20s most often call for alcohol and chemical dependency problems with men being nearly five times as likely to call for those same issues.

As workers get older, they tend to call EAPs more often for occupational-related concerns, such as manager referrals for poor performance, absenteeism or interpersonal problems, the survey finds.
When it comes to certain industries, 15 percent of all calls from the construction sector are related to alcohol and chemical dependency, which is more than twice of the health care industry. However, the health care industry experiences the highest levels of stress and anxiety-related calls to the EAP. Among employees in the retail industry, they have the most calls over psychological conditions.
"As we learn more about people's issues, preferences and concerns as they relate to age, gender and occupation, we can customize our EAP/work-life programs to meet the challenges of an organization's unique population," said Dr. Richard A. Chaifetz, chairman and CEO of ComPsych.
