Robert Benish has stepped down as executive director at the Plan Sponsor Council of America after five years in the post.  He will be replaced by Tony Verheyen.

Verheyen has been a member of the PSCA board and the executive committee of the trade association, which is focused on employer-sponsored retirement plans.

Beyond his work at the council, he also recently has been a "human capital" consultant at Willis Group Holdings, a global risk advisor, insurance and reinsurance broker, according to an online profile.

"We recognize Bob for his five years of stewardship of PSCA," Steve McCaffrey, chairman of PSCA's board, said in a statement announcing the leadership change. "His contributions have been appreciated and we wish him well."

It was not clear where Benish will be working next. He previously worked as president of the Retirement Education Center; director of Participant Services at AMVESCAP Retirement Services; and vice president, Plan Sponsor Marketing, at Scudder Investments.

Meanwhile, it appears that there could be further leadership changes at the PSCA. McCaffrey said that the naming of the new executive director is "the first of several steps PSCA is taking to build a new leadership team by and for our members."

"Our members are enthusiastic about the role PSCA will play in the future, and so are we," he added.

The changes come as the council is also providing more training for members and placing new focus on areas beyond defined contribution retirement plans, such as health savings accounts and non-qualified deferred compensation plans.

"This is an exciting time for PSCA, and we will do our best to ensure PSCA continues promoting the best interests of defined contribution plan sponsors and participants, and acting as an agent of change in the benefits industry," Verheyen said in statement.

"PSCA's best days are ahead of it," McCaffrey added. "We are eager to see what the future brings as we move forward, energized in our mission."

PSCA says it remains committed to helping plan sponsors "solve real problems, create positive change for employee benefit programs, and expand on the success of the employer-sponsored retirement system," he continued. McCaffrey is the senior counsel for National Grid USA Service Co.

The PSCA was founded in 1947 and now serves sponsors with more than 6 million plan participants. Its members include large and small companies, as well as non-profit organizations.
