There’s been considerable focus on health insurancecost-shifting to covered individuals and families since the passageof the Affordable Care Act. But much of the shift occurred beforeAmericans started looking to insurance exchanges for less costlycoverage.

That’s what a research team composed primarily of University ofMichigan scholars found when insurance records for 2009 to 2013were examined. The study found that inpatient hospitalization costspaid by patients rose 37 percent from 2009 to 2013, to the pointthat the average insured individual was paying more than $1,000annually in shared costs.
