It is possible to keep employees engaged even if they’renot working at the office.

That is one of a number of findings in a survey by Vistage Worldwide of 1,350 small-businessleaders, roughly 70 percent of whom say that at least part of theirstaff works remotely at times.

The study highlights the ways that employers can allow employeesto work remotely and stay connected to theircolleagues and the workplace culture.

More than half of small-business CEOs cite regular communication— through email, webinars and face-to-face meetings — as key tomaintaining worker engagement.

Then again, most CEOs (57 percent) also concede that they don’thave a way of measuring employee engagement.

The study shed light on other concerns for small-businessleaders.

Just under half of the leaders surveyed say they expect the newovertime rule that goes into effect on Dec. 1 to have an impact onthe pay structure of their workforce.

The new rule will require all employees making up to $47,476 ayear to receive time-and-a-half pay when they work over 40 hours aweek. For over a decade, those making more than $23,600 were exemptfrom mandatory overtime.

Most small-business CEOs express confidence about the comingyear for their companies. Sixty-nine percent say they expect theirsales revenue to grow, while just over half believe their profitswill rise.

For small businesses, the economy is relatively tough right now.Unemployment is low, which makes recruitment difficult, but theeconomy is just barely growing, which means there has not been ahuge boost in investment and consumption to drive businessgrowth.

To retain qualified employees, small businesses are feelingpressure to increase pay. Two-thirds say they raise wageson an annual basis.
