(Bloomberg) — With graduation gifts, it's the thought that counts. The cash is nice, too. Spending on graduation gifts in the U.S. is expected to reach $5.6 billion this year, according to a new survey from the National Retail Federation.

That tops last year's $5.4 billion and is the highest level in the 11 years of the NRF 's graduation spending survey, which covers high school and college.
