Amid growing uncertainty over the health of the global economy, it's the flight to safety that's shaping the employment outlook of many students responding to Universum's World's Most Attractive Employers 2019 survey. "While there appears to be continued confidence among many students about the healthy state of the current job market, this year's survey also registered a decade-high percentage of students seeking employment security, especially women," the authors write. "This rising sentiment among students may be due to perceptions about the employment outlook, or it may simply be a sign of greater conservatism among Generation Z compared to millennials." Related: What are employers doing to recruit workers in the current market? Other notable trends from this year's survey results: international careers are losing their appeal; students still want employers to be more present on-campus even though social media and employer websites may be top channels for job searches; Gen Zers are more purpose-driven and entrepreneurial than millennials were a decade ago; and females are increasingly "knocking on the doors of male-dominated industries" like banking and tech. Universum surveyed 247,235 business, engineering and IT students in the world's 12 largest economies. The students were asked: (a) which employer characteristics are most influential as they consider future employment and (b) which employer brands they most admire. To be considered, companies must rank in the top 90 percent of employers within at least six of the 12 largest world economies, as weighted by GDP.
