Last year, a documentary was released, It’s Not Personal, It’s Just Healthcare, which exposed the problems and flaws within the current insurance systems, encouraging leaders to start questioning the system. And that’s exactly what happened.

In a fireside chat, Paul Wilson sat down with benefits advisors, company leaders, and the documentary’s creators to discuss the film and dive deeper into innovative ideas to help change the industry.

The keynote opened with a clip of the documentary where a patient is trying to get a life-saving drug that costs $6,000 to get made but will cost the patient $75,000.

“It happens every day all day long,” says Deb Ault, president & CEO of AIMM. Patients are trying to get life-saving care, but can’t afford to go into tens of thousands dollars of debt.

Lester Morales, founder & CEO of Next Impact, shares, “That’s real and you should be really pissed off.”

“You almost becomes desensitized to this,” says Chelsea Ryckis, co-founder of ETHOS Benefits. She explained that after the first showing of the documentary, employers came up to her to share their thoughts. “There were two emotions. People were either really pissed off or really sad. It’s those human impact stories that are our ‘why’”.

Bart Camarata, the executive producer and director of the documentary, says that a main goal of the film was to show employers that they have options. "I think most CEOs either are unaware of the problem or they've just given up because they think they have no other option."

Morales shares that he is shocked that society is shocked that health care costs continue to increase when, in reality, one has to go through publicly traded companies that have a fiduciary responsibility to their shareholders for health care.

"Bigger is not better... There is a preconceived notion that a bigger insurance carrier has bigger protections, a bigger brokerage has better leverage and better solutions... That is absolutely not the case," adds Ryckis.

"This is life and death that we are dealing with here and we need to start hitting the employers in the eyes," says Ault.

Morales compares this tumultuous fight to going to the gym after not going for awhile. You will feel sore but "that means you are doing something right," says Morales.

"Are you up for the fight? If we don't stand up and fix it, either get in the fight or get out of my way," Ault states.
