In an industry that demands resilience, adaptability and heart, women continue to lead the way — not by following a script, but by writing their own. For some, this starts as a leap of faith, a job that turns into a lifelong career. For others, it’s about building something from the ground up, creating space where both strategy and soul have a seat at the table. What do they have in common? A deep commitment to doing the work, lifting others as they climb, and staying grounded in what matters most.

It’s easy to focus on titles, milestones or accolades — and those absolutely matter. But the real power lies in the stories behind them. The long hours. The missed chances that led to better ones. The quiet wins no one sees. The clarity that comes from knowing why you do what you do.

This month, I’m highlighting two women who exemplify what it means to lead with purpose and grit: Yun Mei Chalif of BenefitMall and Rachel Hawkins of Angler Insurance. Yun turned a chance opportunity into a decades-long career, growing into a respected leader while continuously investing in the next generation. Rachel is rewriting the rules of health care strategy — and doing it on her terms, with family, fishing, and flower farming built right into the business plan.

I walked into the insurance world back in 1996, not fully realizing the mark it would leave on my life. By 1999, license in hand, I made the decision that this wasn’t just a job; it was going to be my career.

Since then, I’ve had the chance to work across nearly every corner of our industry, from carriers to broker partners, and now at BenefitMall. Every step has sharpened my perspective, deepened my knowledge, and reinforced why I love this business: It’s all about helping others succeed.

For the past 18+ years, BenefitMall has been home. During my journey from senior broker sales rep to North Texas market director, I’ve grown alongside some of the best in the industry.

I’ve also had the privilege to give back, serving as LPRT Co-Chair and then Chair with NAHU, mentoring emerging talent, and volunteering in my community. Nearly 30 years in, I’m as grateful as ever for the work, the people and the purpose that continues to guide my path.”

“Over the past year, I’ve leaned all the way in, setting bold goals and chasing them down. Being named a 2025 BenefitsPRO Advisor of the Year finalist was a huge honor and a milestone that speaks to the work I love: Helping employers take control of their health care through smart, self-funded strategies. But honestly, one of the wins I’m most proud of is designing a career that keeps family front and center. The ability to be fully present — for my clients and my people — is something I never take for granted. These days, when I’m not deep in plan design or helping employers rewrite the rules of health care, you’ll probably find me on the water with my family, fishing rod in hand, or out at my dahlia farm, elbow-deep in blooms. That little plot of land is more than a hobby — it’s my recharge zone, a reminder that joy and purpose don’t have to be separate goals.”

Every story shared here is a reminder that success looks different for each of us — and that’s exactly the point. Whether you’re building something new, leading with quiet strength, or finally seeing years of effort pay off, your journey matters. I’m always looking to feature the voices of those who are moving our community forward.
