U.S. Sen. Al Franken said Wednesday he plans to pursue legislation or federal regulations requiring encryption of all laptops containing private medical information, after presiding over a hearing on aggressive debt collection practices in several Minnesota hospitals.
Gov. Mark Dayton is turning his focus to employment, hoping to build a legacy as Minnesota's jobs governor and get beyond the state government shutdown that put 22,000 state employees out of work for nearly three weeks.
Turning off the lights on Minnesota's state government isn't a money-saver. In fact, the state's six-day-old shutdown over state spending is costing it millions of dollars — a toll that will only rise the longer it lasts.
With little time to spare before a state government shutdown, Democratic Gov. Mark Dayton and top Republican lawmakers turned Tuesday to one of the most disputed areas of the unfinished state budget — health and welfare programs.
